Everything you need to know about your first physiotherapy appointment
Posted by Évolution Physio — on Wednesday, August 31, 2022
The first time can always feel a little stressful. It often comes with not knowing what to expect—and physiotherapy is no different!
So, what should you expect when booking your first appointment with a physiotherapist at an Évolution clinic?
Here, we take the time to break down everything you need to know before visiting us for the first time.
Our approach
First, it’s important to understand the role of a physiotherapist and their approach so that we are on the same page. According to the Ordre professionnel de la physiothérapie du Québec:
“Physiotherapy is a health science whose role is to help you regain the maximum of your physical abilities.”
Staying true to this mission, Évolution physiotherapists adopt a specialized approach that incorporates several treatment methods, such as:
- Manual therapy
- Therapeutic exercises
- The use of treatments adapted to your condition such as motor control, muscle release, dry needling, the McKenzie method, and more
Depending on your condition, our physiotherapists will choose an approach tailored to help you achieve your goals, regardless of your age or lifestyle.
At Évolution Physio, we work as a team with our patients. For us, progress and recovery should happen in a positive and collaborative environment. The relationship with the patient is essential, which is why we do everything we can to support you. In addition to mobilizing our expertise, Évolution Physio is part of a network of clinics that allows us to draw on additional resources to help you progress while enjoying the process.
How does the first appointment work?
During the first appointment, the physiotherapist will perform a detailed evaluation of your condition and discuss your goals. This allows us to establish a treatment plan together that will guide you toward recovery.
The evaluation includes several components.
1. Initial discussion
The first part mainly involves a dynamic conversation between you and the physiotherapist, allowing them to better understand:
- When the pain appears
- Where the pain is located
- Its intensity
- Which activities trigger your pain
- How it affects your daily life, sports, or leisure activities
2. Defining your goals
After the initial assessment, the physiotherapist will discuss your specific goals with you. These may include:
- Running 10 kilometers
- Being able to reach dishes in a cupboard
- Returning to work
3. Physical evaluation
Once your situation and goals are clear, the physiotherapist will conduct a series of tests to identify the structures involved, such as:
- Functional tests (e.g., walking, single-leg balance, moving from sitting to standing)
- Joint range of motion and muscle strength tests
- Specific tests related to the affected structure (for example ligament tests or neural tension tests)
4. Education and explanation
The physiotherapist will then explain their clinical hypotheses regarding:
- The source of the pain
- The injury mechanism
- The expected prognosis
- The recommended frequency of treatments
- And more
5. Treatment begins immediately
Treatment typically begins during the first visit, and you will be given and taught an exercise program to follow.
The first appointment usually lasts about one hour, although it can go by quickly.
How to prepare for your first physiotherapy appointment
To make the most of your time with the physiotherapist, a few simple preparations can help.
First, wear clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated.
For example:
- If you have a knee injury, consider bringing shorts.
- If your issue is related to the neck, avoid wearing a turtleneck and opt for a shirt with an open neckline.
The important thing is that you feel comfortable moving.
If you have a medical prescription or imaging results, bring them with you as they may help the physiotherapist better understand your condition.
However, note that you have direct access to physiotherapy, meaning you do not need a medical prescription to book an appointment. That said, some insurance providers require a prescription for reimbursement, so it is recommended to check with your insurer beforehand.
In summary
Your first consultation with a physiotherapist doesn’t need to be stressful. Our team of experts is dedicated to addressing your pain and helping you recover through a personalized and professional approach.
