Hand numbness while cycling: causes and solutions - Evolution Physio

Hand numbness is a major issue for any passionate cyclist. Whether it occurs after 10 or 200 kilometers, it is important to properly identify the cause so it can stop.

Is it a question of equipment?

Technique?

Position?

A real puzzle before you can get back to chasing your best Strava segments!

Let’s explore the different possible causes together so you can enjoy cycling again without discomfort.

Equipment

If you recently changed bikes, it’s possible that a stiffer frame or a more aggressive geometry is transmitting more road vibration to the handlebars. High-performance or aerodynamic bikes are designed to maximize power transfer, often sacrificing comfort for increased frame rigidity.

The piece of equipment most often associated with hand numbness is cycling gloves. While gloves can help reduce numbness, it’s important to be careful when choosing them. Thicker padding does not necessarily solve the problem. In fact, if you suffer from carpal tunnel compression, thicker gloves may even worsen the condition. Most glove padding only covers the outer edges of the hand and may limit proper weight distribution on the handlebars.

Solutions

  • Always test ride a bike before purchasing it. Not all manufacturers or models prioritize comfort.
  • If you experience hand numbness with your current bike and are considering a new one, look at endurance-style bikes, which offer more comfortable geometry and often include vibration-absorbing systems in the frame and fork.
  • Your current equipment may simply need small adjustments to improve blood circulation and comfort.
  • Try double wrapping your handlebar tape to reduce numbness, especially during long rides.
  • Using wider tires (28–32 mm) allows lower tire pressure, which helps absorb road imperfections felt in the hands and perineum.

Technique

Some cyclists develop hand numbness because of habits built over time.

For example, if you feel less confident in your riding skills, you may unconsciously grip the handlebars too tightly. This constant pressure on the hands and muscles can create uncomfortable numbness.

Does this sound familiar?

Solution

Practice removing one hand from the handlebars at a time while pedaling. This will improve your bike handling skills and reduce excessive pressure on the handlebars.

Positioning

Bike positioning can make a huge difference in comfort.

1. Saddle position

The saddle greatly influences comfort on the handlebars. If the saddle is tilted too far forward, you may slide forward while pedaling, increasing pressure on your hands.

2. Saddle height

This directly affects how much weight is placed on the handlebars.

3. Handlebar position

Proper positioning ensures your wrists are not excessively bent and that you are not leaning too far over the front wheel due to downward rotation of the handlebars.

When it comes to proper positioning, a few centimeters of height or a few degrees of angle can make a big difference. That’s why getting a professional bike fitting is a valuable investment. It allows you to:

  • Significantly improve comfort
  • Know your ideal positioning measurements
  • Have reliable reference points when buying a new bike
  • Receive expert guidance for your cycling setup

The key takeaway is that hand numbness is not inevitable. There are many possible solutions to address the problem.

If the numbness persists even after your rides, it may be related to neural irritation originating from another aspect of your daily life. Our physiotherapists can help identify the source of your symptoms so you can return to cycling comfortably—no matter the cause.
