Sports physiotherapy and its impact on athlete performance

Physiotherapy plays a major role in the development of a professional athlete’s career. The sports physiotherapist ensures the prevention and treatment of injuries related to the intense impacts the body experiences during elite sports practice.
Prevention
As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure! This is especially true when an athlete dedicates significant effort and preparation for a competition. The sports physiotherapist follows the athlete on a daily basis to intervene as soon as symptoms appear or simply to ensure proper physical recovery. Through various mobilizations and treatments, including taping, the physiotherapist restores mobility, promotes restorative sleep, and helps muscles respond better to exertion. They also act as a liaison between kinesiologists, coaches, and athletes to minimize overuse injuries during the competitive season.
First responder
During competitions or important training sessions, it is common for the sports physiotherapist to be part of the athlete’s close support team. They are present to optimize physical preparation and ready to act quickly in the event of an injury. Because the physiotherapist knows the athlete’s injury history, warm-ups can be optimized in coordination with the kinesiologist to prevent recurrence. Competitions often bring stress and nervousness, making the athlete’s body more prone to muscle tension, which the physiotherapist helps manage. For traumatic injuries such as concussions, fractures, sprains, or others, the physiotherapist is responsible for on-site decisions—reassuring the athlete, immobilizing them, calling an ambulance if needed, or advising the coach on return-to-sport protocols. During competitions or training, the physiotherapist conducts the initial assessment of traumatic injuries and decides the next steps in care.
Rehabilitation and return to sport
Whether after an injury or for more advanced physical preparation, sports physiotherapy plays a crucial role in an athlete’s rehabilitation and recovery. Often, a series of tests is conducted in preparation for returning to competition, particularly after an injury. Various tools are used to analyze performance and develop sport-specific training programs with kinesiologists. Sports physiotherapy continually invests energy and research to make prevention, rehabilitation, and athletic training more effective.
Preparation and follow-up
While the physical aspect of sports physiotherapy is often emphasized in an athlete’s career, the psychological and emotional aspects are also important. Because body and mind are closely linked, stress and strong emotions experienced by the athlete impact physical performance. The sports physiotherapist is present during the athlete’s preparation, through the peak stress of competition, and afterward. They can therefore provide moral support, sharing in the athlete’s successes and setbacks.
