TRUE OR FALSE: Runners are more at risk of developing knee osteoarthritis? - Evolution Physio

FALSE!

Contrary to what many people may think, running is not the enemy of your knees—quite the opposite!

In fact, several studies have shown that recreational runners have a lower risk of developing knee osteoarthritis than sedentary individuals. This is explained by the moderate impacts of running, which improve joint lubrication and stimulate cartilage vascularization, promoting better long-term joint health.

What about elite runners?

If you have several marathons under your belt, don’t worry. Obviously, the greater the number of impacts, the more the benefits described above can be exceeded. However, the risk of developing knee osteoarthritis still remains equivalent to that of a sedentary person. Many other factors unrelated to physical activity also play a role in the development of the condition.

If you are a runner with knee osteoarthritis, should you stop running?

No. Whether you are a recreational or competitive runner, it is possible to keep running. It may sometimes be necessary to adjust your training volume and, most importantly, to listen to your body. If your knees are causing you pain, do not hesitate to consult a professional. Our physiotherapists can equip you with exercises tailored to your specific needs.
