What to expect during your first physiotherapy visit?
Posted by Evolution Physio — on Thursday, February 15, 2018
Did you know that since the early 1990s, you can consult a physiotherapist in private practice without a medical referral? Simply contact us and we will be able to provide you with the care you need.
First, you can book an appointment in person, by phone, or by clicking the “Book an appointment” tab on the Évolution Physio website. A receptionist will be happy to answer your questions regarding available time slots, the cost of an evaluation or treatment, the specific training of our physiotherapists, and more. If your questions are specifically intended for a physiotherapist, the receptionist will make sure to pass along your call.
Once your appointment is scheduled, we recommend arriving at the clinic at least 15 minutes before your visit. The receptionist will welcome you and ask you to complete a personal information form. You will need to answer questions about your personal information, the reason for your consultation, your medical history, related conditions, medications, and more. If you have a medical referral, test results, or any other relevant documentation, make sure to provide them to the receptionist so we can review them. This information will help your physiotherapist optimize your care.
As with any healthcare profession, it may happen that your physiotherapist is running a few minutes late. Don’t worry, you haven’t been forgotten! Depending on the situation, the receptionist will try to inform you of the waiting time as accurately as possible. If you are in a hurry, feel free to let the staff know and we will do our best to adjust and respect your schedule.
Plan about one hour for a physiotherapy evaluation. During this first visit, the physiotherapist will ask you specific questions about your issue (subjective assessment). This will be followed by an objective examination, where the physiotherapist performs tests to confirm or rule out different diagnostic hypotheses. Based on this evaluation, the physiotherapist will explain the physiotherapy diagnosis to the best of their knowledge.
You will then be presented with a clear, measurable, and realistic treatment plan based on your condition and your goals. This plan may include education, manual therapy, personalized exercises, and different pain-relief modalities such as electrotherapy or taping. During subsequent follow-up appointments, this treatment plan will be implemented and continuously adjusted according to the progress of your condition. Follow-up visits typically last about 30 minutes.
Finally, rest assured that your physiotherapist will consider your condition as a whole. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions regarding your first physiotherapy visit.
We look forward to meeting you!
