When pain appears—whether due to an injury or trauma—we quickly look for solutions to relieve or reduce it. This is the primary reason people consult a physiotherapy clinic.
Physiotherapy can also be helpful for chronic pain conditions. It supports the management of both physical and psychological discomfort and helps reduce the impact and intensity of these issues in daily activities.
Pain can significantly affect everyday life when it is not properly managed. It can impact mood, drain energy during the day, and reduce sleep quality at night. Reducing and managing pain more effectively means more rest and better physical recovery. Physiotherapy can help improve the physical and psychological capacities of people experiencing pain, ultimately enhancing their quality of life. It can also provide valuable tools for individuals who want to maintain good physical health and increase their resilience against potential injuries.
Discover the benefits of a physiotherapy session and how it unfolds so that you can be prepared when you arrive at the clinic.
What to expect during your first session?
Regardless of the reason for your consultation, the physiotherapist is required to conduct an evaluation before beginning any treatment. An up-to-date health status and a thorough review of your medical history will allow them to gain a comprehensive understanding of your situation. For this reason, you will be asked to complete a detailed health questionnaire upon arrival.
The session will begin with a discussion with the physiotherapist to better understand the reasons for your consultation and the different factors influencing your overall health. Through several targeted questions, the physiotherapist will identify your main concern and how it affects your daily activities.
After this part of the assessment, the objective examination will follow. During this stage, the physiotherapist will observe several aspects related to your injury: posture, motor control, strength, flexibility, mobility, and any joint or muscular restrictions. They will also perform diagnostic tests to evaluate the condition of your joints, tendons, and ligaments—for example, in cases of tendinitis or sprains.
It is therefore important to wear comfortable clothing, as your physiotherapist will ask you to move while respecting your current limits. The injured area will also need to be visible during the evaluation. For example, shorts are recommended for knee issues, and a tank top or loose shirt is preferable for shoulder problems. Athletic clothing, including comfortable shoes, is recommended for physiotherapy appointments.
After evaluating all aspects of your condition and injury, the physiotherapist will explain the diagnosis and establish a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This includes the goals and frequency of treatments, as well as exercises, tools, and recommendations to ensure optimal management of your condition. Short-, medium-, and long-term goals will be discussed with you to help restore your physical health and allow you to return to the activities that matter most to you.
In general, treatment begins during the first session. The physiotherapist will use different techniques to help you regain confidence in your movements while strengthening both your body and mind, enabling you to function better. Physiotherapy helps restore physical abilities, improve flexibility and strength, and reinforce the body to help prevent future problems.
