Why choose a bike fitting with a physiotherapist? - Evolution Physio

When we think about bike fitting, the first instinct is usually to turn to a local bike shop. However, did you know that this service can also be performed in a clinic by a physiotherapist with expertise in cycling? Here are five interesting points about consulting a physiotherapist to evaluate and correct your cycling position.

1 – Biomechanical knowledge and analysis

One of the main differences between a bike fitting done in physiotherapy and one done in a bike shop is that the evaluation begins even before getting on the bike. The physiotherapist will assess the patient’s motor control using cycling-related functional tests, evaluate balance and the strength of key muscles, and assess muscular and joint flexibility that could influence the cyclist’s position on the bike.

Once on the bike, the physiotherapist can correlate the observations made off the bike with the patient’s muscle control, pedaling biomechanics, and any discomfort experienced.

2 – Knowledge of injuries and conditions

If you consult for a bike fitting, one likely reason is that you experience discomfort or pain while cycling. Physiotherapists have an advanced knowledge of human anatomy and related conditions. They can therefore provide an approach tailored to your specific issues by identifying the structures and factors contributing to your injuries.

3 – Treatments and exercise prescription

As physiotherapists, our goal is to help you reach your performance goals while maximizing comfort. While a proper bike fit is an excellent starting point, the physiotherapist can also guide you through complementary exercises to improve your pedaling technique or help resolve underlying issues. These exercises may be done on or off the bike, depending on your needs.

4 – Who is it for?

Physiotherapy bike fitting is designed for all types of cyclists—whether you ride recreationally, as an amateur, or competitively. It can help if you experience pain or discomfort, have purchased a new bike, want to prevent injuries, improve performance, or any combination of these goals.

Whether you ride a road bike, hybrid bike, or triathlon bike, a proper bike fit can help. Also note that a bike fitting performed by a physiotherapist may be covered by insurance if your plan includes physiotherapy services.
