Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is therapy through work or activity. By using meaningful activities and tasks, it helps evaluate and develop a person’s functional abilities.

Occupational therapy is a healthcare profession that assesses and treats individuals in order to preserve and develop their independence and autonomy in daily life. This profession is characterized by education, rehabilitation and reconditioning through activity (from the Greek word ergon, meaning work). Through graduated therapeutic activities that simulate tasks from daily living, domestic activities, work and leisure—as well as other global and analytical exercises—the occupational therapist organizes therapy aimed at improving functional abilities and skills, either individually or in groups.

An occupational therapist is a university-trained professional who evaluates the different dimensions of a person (physical, emotional and cognitive), as well as their environment and daily activities. They establish a treatment plan and supervise the client in developing the abilities required to perform various personal, domestic, professional or leisure tasks.

In the clinic, at home or in the workplace, the client is gradually guided to correct risky postures, adopt safer working methods, develop pain management strategies, better manage stress and energy levels, and adopt healthier work habits.

In cases of residual impairments or functional limitations, the occupational therapist may recommend assistive devices and certain workplace adaptations to facilitate daily and work-related activities.
